Claude vs ChatGPT for business: plans, prices, and fit

Claude and ChatGPT cost about the same at every seat tier and the same at the mid API tier, so price rarely decides. What decides is your own work. This guide gives the plans and API prices each vendor showed on October 5, 2026, and a 10-task test you can run in an afternoon.

You open two tabs, give each the same brief, and read both drafts. One is a little warmer, the other a little tighter, and you cannot say which one saves you time. After three more tries the question has stopped being about the tools and become a debate about taste.

Price will not settle it. At every seat tier the two vendors list nearly the same numbers, and their mid-priced API models are priced identically. This post sets out what each vendor's pages said on October 5, 2026, where the real differences are, and how to run a fair test on your own work.

Two disclosures. The AI that helped draft this page is Claude, made by Anthropic, one of the two vendors compared, so we kept to the vendors' own pages and made no claim about which writes better. And Gonzo Digital's own systems run on Hermes and DeepSeek, not on Claude or ChatGPT; our trust page lists which model each system uses.

What the old version of this post claimed, and why it is gone

The 2026 original said Gonzo had run both tools through six agency workflows over 30 days and named a winner for each. We have no record of that test we can publish, so every result, time saving, and "winner" from it has been removed. It also quoted API prices and context windows that are out of date, and user statistics from a third-party blog that we could not trace to a primary source. What remains is what the vendors state.

Seat plans: nearly the same at every tier

For a team that wants people to chat with an AI at work, the choice is a per-seat plan. Prices were read on October 5, 2026.

Claude's own pricing page loaded directly. ChatGPT's pricing page refused our request, so the ChatGPT plan prices come from OpenAI's Codex pricing page, which lists the ChatGPT plans that include Codex. Check ChatGPT's own page before you buy.

Both vendors say usage limits apply, and both say prices can change. Claude's plans use a rolling five-hour limit plus weekly limits on paid plans.[1] What a "seat" lets you do in a day is therefore a limit as well as a price, so test with real work before you roll a plan out to a team.

Both team plans say they do not train on your content by default.[1][2] The setting on any plan can differ, and your contract and the vendor's data terms are the authority, so read them with your lawyer or adviser if the data is sensitive.

API prices and context windows

If you want AI inside a workflow, you pay per token through an API, not per seat. Prices below are per million tokens, input then output.

Model tierClaudeOpenAI
Fast and cheapHaiku 4.5: $1 and $5, 200K context[3][4]GPT-6 Luna: $0.10 and $0.50, 1.05M context[5][6]
MidSonnet 5.5: $2 and $10, 1M context[3][4]GPT-6.1 Sol: $2 and $10, 1.05M context[5][6]
HigherOpus 5.5: $4 and $20, 1M context[3][4]none listed between Sol and Astra[5]
TopFable 5.1: $10 and $50, 1M context[3][4]GPT-6 Astra: $10 and $50, 1.05M context[5][6]

Two things stand out. The mid and top tiers are priced alike, and both vendors' current main models offer around a million tokens of context. The old claim that Claude has 200,000 tokens against ChatGPT's 128,000 no longer holds for the current models; only Claude's Haiku 4.5 lists 200K.[4] The tiers are labels by price, not a verdict on quality, so do not read the table as a ranking.

A worked example shows how small the per-call cost is. A call that sends 2,000 tokens and gets 500 back costs $0.004 for input and $0.005 for output at $2 and $10 per million, or $0.009 in total, so 1,000 such calls cost about $9.[3][5] That is our arithmetic from the listed prices, and it ignores caching discounts, which both vendors list. At this size, the price per call matters less than whether the answer is right.

Where the real differences are

Price is close, so look at what each product does around the model.

  • Features around chat. Zapier's app testers, whose comparison was last updated in May 2026, say the two are so similar that the choice depends on which you prefer. They credit ChatGPT with image generation and a broader feature set, and Claude with a more natural writing style and coding tools.[7] That is one tester's opinion, and Zapier sells automation that connects both.
  • Plugging into your tools. Make lists OpenAI, Anthropic Claude, and Gemini apps among its AI modules, so a no-code flow can call either.[8] Make's MCP server lets assistants such as Claude and ChatGPT run scenarios in your account.[9] You do not have to pick one for good.
  • Admin controls. Both list single sign-on on team plans, and both list audit logs and SCIM at enterprise level.[1][2] Read the plan page for the exact controls you need.

What neither vendor's page tells you is which one writes your ad copy, summarizes your reports, or follows your brief more faithfully. Only your own tasks can answer that.

A 10-task test you can run this week

  1. Collect ten real tasks from last month: two drafts, two summaries, two data clean-ups, two customer replies, two things that went wrong last time.
  2. Run each on both tools with the same brief and the same material. Run the contested ones twice, because outputs vary.
  3. Strip the labels. Have two people who do not know which is which score each result for how long it took to edit, how many facts needed fixing, and whether it followed the brief.
  4. Record the cost. For seat plans, count the hours saved. For API use, count tokens.
  5. Decide per task, not per brand. Many teams end up with both tools for different jobs, which means a second subscription, about $20 a month at the individual tier.[1][2]

If the two come out level, choose on what you already pay for, what your data rules allow, and what your team enjoys using.

A warning for agencies and content teams

AI drafts can be fast, but how you use them matters for search. Google's guidance says that using generative AI to produce many pages without adding value for users may violate its spam policy on scaled content abuse.[10] A draft from either tool still needs your own facts, examples, and editing before it goes out under a client's name. Our note on answer engine optimization covers what the search companies say about AI content and AI search.

When a chat tool is not enough

Chat tools suit work that a person starts, reads, and corrects. They stop being enough when the AI must act on its own, at 2 a.m., on a customer's behalf: answering an inquiry, booking a slot, passing a case to a person. That needs a built system with a defined scope, logging, and a human handoff, not a chat window. We build those, and our comparison of a generic chatbot against a built system lays out the difference with sources. Examples are the Lead Response Engine and the Connected Operations Layer, which is meant for connecting tools such as Claude and ChatGPT to your own data through MCP. For workflow tools that call either model, see the best no-code automation tools.

Questions people ask

Is Claude or ChatGPT better for business? The vendors' pages do not say, and the price gap is small. Run the 10-task test above on your own work.

Do they cost the same? At the individual and team tiers the listed prices are close: $20 a month for Claude Pro monthly or ChatGPT Plus, and $20 to $25 per seat on team plans.[1][2] ChatGPT also lists a lower-priced Go plan at $8.[2]

Which has the bigger context window? On the current main models they are about equal, at around a million tokens.[4][6]
